Hannukahs of Long Ago

The sun is falling down

Dad comes home from town

Mama makes the meal

The kids help grate and peel

A year of waiting ends

With newly fallen snow

And we remember Hannukahs of long ago

Grandma looks out the window

Her hands are chapped and dry

The last light hits her beauty

A tear escapes her eye

The shadows stretch and lengthen

The sun is hanging low

And she remembers Hannukahs of long ago

Oh, and now it’s time to light the match with grace

Light the shammes, lift it from its resting place

Soon the kids will tear the wrapping

From their sparkly gifts

On the stove is latkes

First delicious whiffs

Many years from now

These children’s eyes will close

And they’ll remember Hannukahs of long ago

Many years from now

These children’s eyes will close

And they’ll remember Hannukahs of long ago
