Now a couple years ago
I told everybody
That I was the Messiah come to save them
They started lining up with babies to be blessed
The sick and the lame, blocking the pavement
I walked on water and OK sank
Turned wine into whisky and drank, drank, drank
Now with just a couple Snickers and some corn meal mush
I fed six thousand at a time
I spoke in St. Louie, ya gotta play St. Louie
St. Louie, it's a rule of some kind
The blind came to me and I made 'em see
Got the deaf diggin' hi-fidelity
Card tricks, I could do card tricks you wouldn't believe
There's nothing innocent about a newborn babe
That a few years here can't cure
And it's not so much that you burn out
Baby but you finally just endure
Now to tell you the truth, lately even I
Start to get a little overwhelmed
Wars and pain and poverty
Those have been around a long time
But the oceans rise and the fresh water dies
And the hate sticks harder to your insides
And the cars get bigger and the smoke churns out
And your idols fall and you lie a little better
And the train gets further and further off the track
And with each day passing it's harder to turn back
They call Mother Earth "Mother" for a reason
She will revolt
Stop...
Stop what you're doing...
Stop what you're doing and breathe
Stop what you're doing and breathe
Eatin' hamburgers, corporate mergers
Speakin' in tongues, burnin' your lungs
Drinkin' a Coke, repeating some joke
Kissin' the ring, Buffalo wings
Honkin' your horn, internet porn
Takin' the pill, writing your will
Stop what you're doing and breathe
Stop what you're doing and breathe
Stop what you're doing and breathe...

I still smell tobacco on my fingers
My breath reeks of pot and wine and sex
My eyes open up like they haven't in years
So I won't miss whatever happens next
You call me a thief
All right, I'm a thief
Grab a summons Come and ring my bell
I'll be making love with my baby
In the Chelsea Hotel
I told you to meet me at eight o'clock
I said I'll be drinking at the bar
I drove between Newark and Laguardia
Trying to return a rented car
We keep missing connections today
But tomorrow would be just as well
I gotta go make love with my baby
In the Chelsea Hotel
I've been walking all around your neighborhood
My former love
You seem as far away and as sad to me
As those rain clouds above
I hope you're happy and whatever you're doing
I hope you're doing well
And please don't try to contact me
At the Chelsea Hotel
I was starting to think
The world was going to end when the calendar turns
But now you're here I see the future, baby
And they can let the calendar burn
New love is beautiful
But new love is sad
New love brings back all the old loves
That you've ever had
I put out a casting call
And you cast a spell
And we're practicing for the millennium
Making love at the Chelsea Hotel
So who knows what tomorrow brings
But I know where I'll be waking up
Let's just listen to our breath tonight
And the breeze through the window that you opened up
Can you feel our hearts beating
Which one's yours
Which one's mine
You can't tell
Just another day of making love
At the Chelsea Hotel
Spent all day making love
At the Chelsea Hotel

What am I gonna do about Betty
I love her and she loves me
But we can't be together much
So here I am with you in Venice
Watchin' the storm come in
Watchin' the storm come in
Watchin' the storm come in
What am I going to do about the president
He has hope and so do you
But sometimes I have none of it
And sometimes I feel too damn old
But here I am with you in Venice
Watchin' the storm come in
Watchin' the storm come in
Watchin' the storm come in
What am I going to do about my mother
She's not getting any younger
And I've not been the best of sons
But here I am with you in Venice
Watchin' the storm come in
Watchin' the storm come in
Watchin' the storm come in
What am I going to do about marriage
Will I wait as long as my dad did
And then my son will have a father
Who's grown old before his time
But here I am with you in Venice
Watchin' the storm come in
Watchin' the storm come in
Watchin' the storm come in
What am I going to do about life
Put it off some 30 years now
Waiting for someone or something
To tell me yes it's starting now
But here I am with you in Venice
Watchin' the storm come in
Watchin' the storm come in
Watchin' the storm come in
Betty and I can't be together
The president can do what he likes
My mother's fine and my father's dead
And life is always life, and I'm just
Watching the storm come in
Watching the storm come in
Watching the storm come in

I should have written her a note
Said she still had my vote
I should have let her know
That I still loved her so
But I waited, I waited, I waited
Too long
Now I stand before you all
Just to remind you all
That pride goes before a fall
Pride goes before a fall
If you don't want love to quit
You must take care of it
I saw the warning signs
But I had so much time
And I waited I waited
I waited
Too long
Now I stand before you all
Just to remind you all
That pride goes before a fall
Pride goes before a fall
Nothing you can do, when it's gone
ÔCept think about the foolish things you did
And didn't do
When it was there I thought I was so strong
Why did I wait so long
My toughness for the world I gave to her instead
And I waited, I waited,
I waited
Too long
Now I stand before you all
Just to remind you all
That pride goes before a fall
Pride goes before a fall

Joe Christ was Jesus' daddy
He worked at the corner saloon
Served up Shafers' and Shlitzes
For the mill workers starting around noon
Joe Christ worked on the weekends
And on the major holidays, you bet
You know he would have tended bar on Christmas
If Christmas had been invented yet
One day his wife came in the bar
Mary Christ did not come in most days
She said Joe, there's something that I gotta tell you
I'm pregnant, big with child, in the family way
Joe Christ, he wrinkled up his brow
He said babe you know I love you have no fear
But you know on account of my condition
We haven't actually done it in a year
She said baby cakes, my honey pie, my Joe
You know I would never lie to you
It's the Lord himself, done it to me
He brought along champagne and chocolate too
It was magical, I just could not say no
He had this French accent, and what's more
He treated me just rough enough, how I like it
I felt like a ten-thousand dollar whore
But Joe, Joe you gotta understand
It didn't mean nothing, that's no lie
I only seen him once and now I'm done with it
Joe, you're my number one guy
Joe Christ
Joe Christ
Joe Christ
Deedle dee dee dee dee
Joe Christ's gonna have himself a family
Well Mary left the bar and Joe just stared
He sighed the deepest sigh he ever had
He poured himself a shot and said
I guess I'm gonna kinda sorta be a dad
Joe said, Shots of whisky on the house
And thought, Diapers, Jesus, how can I afford--
And do I believe Mary's story
Was it the milkman or really the Lord
He thought well what choice do I have
With my condition I can't get no other dame
There's a critter on the way, that's the bottom line
Don't really matter how it came
Joe closed the tavern and came on home
He found Mary sleeping on the couch
He turned off the TV and the computer
Rolled up some tobacco from his pouch
Joe Christ he stood out on the front porch
He looked up at the brightest star
And he hoped that his kid would grow up healthy
And in time take his place behind the bar
Joe Christ
Joe Christ
Joe Christ
Deedle dee dee dee dee
Joe Christ's gonna have himself a family
